The 7 Upsides When You Live With a French Bulldog

What is it like to live with a French Bulldog?

French Bulldogs are Not a New Breed

Contrary to popular belief, the French Bulldog’s origins actually trace back to England, not France. Bred initially by English lacemakers and very popular with Victorians, these pups were companions and used as rat catchers.

Their journey to France with their artisan owners led to their current classification of them being called French Bulldogs. The rich blend of transcontinental heritage within these dogs not only adds to their irresistible charm but also plays a significant role in crafting their one-of-a-kind worldwide appeal.

French Bulldogs thrive in the family environment. Their affectionate nature makes them excellent companions for children, offering both loyalty and playful engagement.

1. Sociable Souls: These dogs are known for their sociability. Properly socialised, it is genuinley fun to live with a French Bulldog as they get along splendidly with other pets, often becoming fast friends with other dogs and cats.

2. Senior compatibility: Their low exercise needs and calm demeanour make Frenchies ideal for older owners. They provide companionship without the demand for strenuous activity.

3. Emotional Anchors: French Bulldogs excel as emotional support animals. Their presence offers comfort and a sense of security, making them perfect for those in need of constant companionship.

4. Clever and Comical: French Bulldogs may not be the Einsteins of the dog world, but their intelligence and playful antics are sure to entertain. Don’t mistake them for being stupid though – they are clever enough!

5. Ambassadors of Friendship: A Frenchie is a magnet for social interactions. Their friendly demeanour can open doors to new friendships and conversations – you will see this when you take yours for a walk.

6. Child-Friendly Companions: Perfectly sized for children, French Bulldogs are robust enough for play but not so large as to be overwhelming.

7. Grooming Ease: Their short coat means grooming is more straightforward than many other breeds, requiring only routine brushing and occasional baths.

Challenges of Living with a French Bulldog

    • Clingy Characters: Separation anxiety can be a significant issue. Frenchies really do crave human interaction and may not suit those with a busy lifestyle.

    • Fragrant… in a Not-So-Pleasant Way: A Frenchie’s flatulence can be… robust. If you’re sensitive to smells, this could be a concern. You get used to it!

    • Health Matters: French Bulldogs potentially have specific health conditions pertinent to their breed, especially regarding their respiratory system. Prospective owners should be aware of these and have access to good veterinary care.

    • Stubborn Streaks: Training a Frenchie requires patience and consistency due to their occasionally stubborn nature. I can certainly vouch for their stubbornness!

    • Weather Watch: Their brachycephalic features mean Frenchies don’t do well in extreme temperatures. Owners need to be vigilant about their comfort and safety. I will share our experience of this in a later blog post, as Leia successfully had this operation.

A Frenchie is definitely a commitment

Embarking on the journey of Frenchie ownership is not just about enjoying these amzing little dogs with adorable faces and quirky personalities. It’s a commitment to understanding and catering to their unique needs. But for those who are up for the challenge and want to live with a French Bulldog in their home, the rewards are immeasurable: unconditional love, endless entertainment, and a loyal life companion.
